I brought home an IHC power unit today and it is a model U4, I was under the assumption that it is the same engine used on an IHC tractor, the fellow I got it from told me that he thought it was the same as his model A Farmall but afetr looking in my IHC book by Wendal he said that the U4 was rated at 31 hp and that seems a lot for a Farmall A. Is anyone out there familiar with the U4? and where to perhaps get a manual or parts for it? This is the first red in the barn of green for me. The serial number starts with UPH and I am leaning toward maybe a Farmall H engine.

Thanks in advance for any help

As mentioned by RN the U4 engine was used in the H and 4 Series tractors. As a power unit it developed 32 hp @ the governed speed of 1800 rpm. However, to quote from the Service Manual "For continuous load, use not more than 80% of power i.e. 25.2 hp @ 1800 rpm".
Maximum Torque of 110lb ft was developed at 1200 rpm. Hope this is of interest.

Thanks for both of you guys help! Evidently the U4 and the H tractor engines did not share the same carb, I can not find my carb # in any of the tractor vendors listing for kits.

U4 engine- basic engine of W4 standard tread/wheatland tractor=H farmall engine. Power unit may have oil dipstick instead of pan level valves. minor variations in starter location, possible fuel pump, carb location. Check combine archives for further differences. Farmall archives have a U4 swap into H sometime back. RN.
