I've had my C running for several months now and I am wondering if I should be able to see water flow in the radiator? This tractor has no water pump and the water at the top of the radiator reaches about190 degrees and I can still hold my hand on the bottom rad. hose.It hasn't over heated but the new NAPA temp. doesn't come off 130 degrees.with the radiator cap off I don't see much flow, but would there be flow like one with a water pump?

One thing the others did not say is that the temperature gage on the thermosyphon tractors was usually only supplied on those that were equipped with radiator shutters. The gage was to tell you when to open the shutters. If all is OK, the bottom hose on a thermosyhon radiator will never get hot.

It doesn't flow likea water pump. It works though as long as you keep the fan turning.

Thanks for the reply, So does what your'e saying mean it is OK for me to hear a slight boiling sound and a little over flow {very little} after I shut it off? I don't have either of these while it is running.

The thermosyphon system on the C and other early tractors wotrks on the principal of hot water rising. My Cub is the same, and I stucka thermometer in the top of the radiator once to see just how hot it got.Ran about 200 degrees whether working or loafing. The temp guage is conencted to the outlet from the radiator, and willnever get warm unless you let the water get low asnd it doesn't circulate, or the rad. is plugged. Dad had an early C, and we worked it hard at time, and it never overheated, except once when I forgot to check water level and it was low. It won't circulate if water level is low, so watch that. Otherwise it works fine. One other thing, if you change coolant and put in anti-freeze, mix it before adding to tractor. If you just dump in anti-freze, then water, it willnot citrculate, since the anti-freeze is heavier than the water.
