the exhaust pipe hole on my H is not completely round.

description: there is a cut in the shape of a half cirlce about 2" out from the hole.

there are also two small cuts in it about 1/4" L x 1/8" W.

THEORY: the old muffler was sitting on the top of the sheetmetal and rubbed a hole in it.

QUESTION: should the exhaust hole in the sheetmetall be perfectly round?, or are there supposed to be two notches in it?

should i just weld it up?

thanks for looking, and i apologize for these elementary questions.

I think that's a good question. More than one of my H's and M's have those notches too. I have no idea what the reason is but I have always wondered the same thing.

Bob, I have a theory on that, mind you it is just a theory, but, here goes, I think that those notches were cut into the hood to give access to the mounting bolts for the exhaust pipe on the old distillate manifolds, why they didn't just remove the hood first is a mystery.
I have an M and 2 Hs that have had this same hood treatment, all of them were originally distillate or kerosene burners.

Weld it up, the hole was round at one time, but I suppose the muffler rattling around wore it like you said, but 2 inches???? That is a lot of wear, some other problem must have happened over the years.

no, the cut it made is 2" AWAY from the hole for the exhaust. it is 2" away, about 4" long and only a fraction of an inch (probably 1/16"th) wide.

it is the shape of a half circle, thus the theory of the old muffler sitting on top of the sheetmetal.
