Iwas wondering if anyone could give me a little help on explaining the timing mark set up on a farmall H . I've read my IT manual where it said match the single mark tooth on the crank between the two marked teeth on the cam then mesh single marked tooth on cam between the two marked teeth on the magneto gear when i do this the marks are not between the teeth . Like a dummy when i took the motor apart i did't pay attention to the gear marks. Maybe a better explaination would help.Any help would be greatly appreciated.

the problem is the punch marks on the cam are are double on one side and single on the other there are no two teeth marked the double marks are beween the teeth so there is no way to line the single mark tooth on the crank between the double mark teeth on the cam . the mag gear is also the same can't get the tooth between the gear makes more sense to match double marks on cam to double marks on mag.and single marks on crank to single marks cam . thanks for the help

I wonder if a mechanic added some marks when the engine was worked on before. I just checked the marks on an M and the marks for the crankshaft are a single mark that is kind of round in shape. The marks for the distributer are double and are a flatter punch mark. The marks for the distributer are kind of hard to see. If you are lucky you may be able to find the original factory marks and ignore the additional marks.

Hope this helps, Bob

It's hard to see the marks on the cam and crank gears but if you look really close you can find them. The cam gear has two sets of marks, one for the crank and one for the mag or distributer. It isn't that important to time the mag but don't get the two sets of marks mixed up. Done right the mark on one of the gears will be on the end of the gear tooth and the matching mark will be in the valley of the matching gear. I can't think of a better way to describe the process but hope this helps.

I thought you explained it pretty well. Now just why don't the marks line up? The cam gear MUST be right in relation to the crank. The magneto gear don't matter cuz you can take the mag housing off and move that gear.
