We just rebuilt an old M (rebuild head, new pistons rings etc) and when we started it up, its only hitting on two cylinders. We never took the magneto off and i marked the sparkplug wires so i know they are back on the right plugs. the wires worked fine when we stopped it last. The crankshaft, camshaft, timing gears and magneto were not touched at all. What do you think could be causeing this problem? It runs on #3, and #4 cylinder fine but when you take the wires off of 1 and 2 nothing changes. Could something have happened to the ignition system while it was just sitting there? the engine shows good oil pressure and the valve tappet gaps were set to .020 cold. also the last few times we started it, oil came out of the breather. thanks for any help

I agree with Farmer John. Re-adjust your valves. I put a rebuilt head on my brother in laws H and it missed spit and spuddard. Adjusted the valves and it ran fine.

I went thru this very thing a long time ago....fought and fought with it.....couldnt figure it out to save my life.....like you it was 2 cylinders right next to each other....was laying in bed one night and it came to me....the only thing these 2 cylinders had in common was the intake.....jumped out of bed....got dressed and ran out to the shop....pulled the manifold off and found a small peice of rusty gasket material that I had missed when I cleaned the manifold....cleaned it up....put the manifold back on and it ran like a champ...goes thru my mind every time I remove or replace a manifold.....Good Luck...Rick

Try a couple of different spark plugs, sometimes the new ones aren't any good. just a thought.

Check out the ignition system, possibly fouled plugs from the rebuild lube

You have probably got the valves adjusted too tight on these cylinders. Tyr re-adjusting the valves to .017 and see if it starts hitting on all 4.

Last time I checked .020 was looser than .017

Im sure he meant 0.017 hot.

Are you getting fire from No' 1 and 2 wires?

If so, I'd bet on the wire switching gremlin.

we tried taking off #3 and #2 plugs and hooking the wires back up to them to see if there was a spark. from what my dad and i could tell when we turned the motor over, the spark looked the same on both plugs. in fact the motor still ran (just barely) when #3 and #4 (the "good" plug wires) were unhooked. we tried resetting the tappet gaps, they all seemed to be ok, the motor was not hot enough to set them at .017 so we used .020 again. we also took the distributor cap off and everything looked ok in there too but to the trained eye something might have really been wrong. this thing sure has me stumped, thanks for all the replies!
