Painting a grease insert?

I'm about to paint the body of my H and I was wondering how I should tackle the grease inserts? I'm going to replace them all. Should I replace them, paint over them, and then just scrape the paint out of the hole? Or should I leave the old ones on there, paint it, replace the painted inserts, and then touch up the inserts with a paint brush? Your suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If you're going to replace the grease zerts anyway, my suggestion would be to paint and then replace the zerts.

I prefer not to have paint on my zerts. It makes them eaiser to spot and looks better than zerts with the paint peeling or flaking off.

But then I also don't care to put paint my hoses, or paint the starter, fan blade, or generator red, as I think black adds a nice contrast to the red tractor.

Just my opinion here and certainly not intended for those restoring a tractor to original.

Do you mean the grease zerks? Just cover the ends of them with a little grease before you paint. After your paint dries you can just wipe off the paint covered grease.

I agree with Dave. You only need to replace the ones that either don't take grease, or you might replace the ones that don't have the little dill that plugs the hole anymore (if that don't work than dirt can get in). I would do it before you paint and simply paint over them.

That's kind of what I was thinking, the paint will be gone the first time you put the grease gun on it anyway.
