H PTO Drive Removal

I was bushhogging with an H without a shear pin, hit a rock and lost 1- 4th gears. I removed the tranny cover plate and the top 2 set of gears and at least 1 gear on the lowest shaft is stripped.

My question is how do I remove that lowest shaft? I found the retainer ring on the back end of the shaft where the actulal PTO shaft mates, but on the front of that shaft is a bearing with three bolts. I remove the bolts, but nothing moves. The front of the shaft has a large slot where a short coupling can be removed. Do I try and drive that entire lower shaft forward (toward the front of the engine)?

I read in an IT manual to "remove the nut" on the front of the shaft, but the only "nut" I have found up there is the one working on it.

Thanks in advance for the help. JK

John, You have to take the drive coupler off the countershaft and then the seal retainer and then the bearing carrier. Then there is a snap ring on the back of the counter shaft and then it should come out if my my memory serves me correctly. Don't spend to much time or money though, sometimes you can have alittle patience and buy a whole rearend from a junk yard and switch out the whole thing for around 200.00 plus your time... Good Luck Tim K. ps . what did you hit with the mower..

Kirk is right about the nut. Here's the IH Blue Ribbon book paragraph about taking out the lower shaft says:
Does that make any more sense than the IT? I've found that those two books often fill in gaps for each other.

In response to Tim, I hit a medium size rock with the mower. I am moving to this property soon and had not had a chance to clean up all of the rocks, so hit hit this one. You can believe all of the fields are cleaned out of rock now!

Thanks all of you for the info. I did check some gear prices and I think I will look for a new rear instead of replacing parts.

I also noticed the cast housing for the final differential bearings are broke. When you use the jacking bolts on them, whoever worked on it before me must not have removed the bull gears first. Both of them are boken (they still hold the bearings though).

I am going to take that bottom shaft out now that I know how. It is not going to whup me.

JK

On the front of the lower shaft as you described is a threaded nut that tightens against the bearing. This nut is the part you described with the slot in it for the coupling. I blocked the wheels and used a flat piece of bar stock to loosten it. I cant remember for sure but I think it is standard right hand thread. After you get this nut off, the bearing retainer will come off the front of the shaft. P.S. Dont forget to replace the seal when it goes back together.
