I remember when I was a young boy on Grandpa's lap....his H had a throttle lever that had a bell-shaped dome with teeth underneath, and a flat throttle lever that the teeth held in place. Now most I see have a friction-type plate and no cover. What is the story? Which is correct?

You can get that same "look" with the square notch throttle and it has a replaceable insert when it starts to slip. This insert is available from several suppliers. Check "Red Power" magazine ads.
I have obtained several complete assemblies at salvage yards.

Jeff, The one you are describing is referred to as a "sawtooth" throttle and is the original throttle from the factory. You are still able to buy these original type through OEM Tractor Parts although some say they aren't as good as what came from the factory.

The one you remember is the one that came from the factory. Over the years, those tabs on the handle that fit in the teeth wear down, the teeth break, the spring weakens, and the old throttles start slipping and get replaced with the friction types.
