I need a little more uumff than my M has to offer and I always thought a 560 would fill the bill. question is I came close to buying a 560 diesel a while back and a friend i respect told me to stay away from the diesel 560 because of a bad track record of cracking the heads. I also have come to respect many of youralls opinions. what do you guys have to say about it? thanks so much in advance Dan

I had a 560D from new for 17 years and 11,000 hours. The tractor should have been traded for an 806 when it was a year old, but the money wasn't there to trade it for an 806. Instead the 560 was cranked up to between 90 and 100 hp for it's entire lifetime. It was also worked that way, as though it was a 90 hp tractor. At aprox 11,000 hours working on a silo blower the old 560 deposited engine parts all over the barn yard. The 560 was a very economical tractor for me, it was not bought to look at.

In 1978 I would not spend the $4,000. Can. reqiured to put a short block in a tractor without a 3 point hitch. No, I would not spend money on such a tractor today and if you already have an M you shouldn't either Go a few extra dollars and find a 656, 706, 756, etc. You will not be sorry.

In 25 years, I can only remeber seeing or hearing about 1 560 cracking a head and I have owned and been around a number of them. The old wives tale about them being hard starting depends solely on the overall condition of the engine and the willingness of the operator to use the glowplugs. While a 560D is one of my favorite tractors, it is only fair to admit that if being used in a situation where a person wants to start and stop the engine often, they really arent the handiest thing in the world. I find myself eother letting it run or not holding the glowplugs as long as I should.

I have owned and ran a 560 diesel for over 25 years and have not had a bit of problems with it. In fact, other than regular maintanence the motor hasn't been touched. I'd say go for it.

I agree, the hard starting story comes from people who don't have time to hold the glow plug in a for a minute before cranking it over. I have never heard about the cracked heads story. The bad rear ends have been well documented but that was limited to the early models, and nearly all have been replaced. If it hasn't broke in the last 45 years there is a good chance its OK.

Failed head gaskests and being hard to start are what this motor is known for. And with a little care neither of these should bother you.
If I owned one and the gasket failed I would use studs to hold it down on the best head gasket I could buy. As others have reciently posted make SURE all glowplugs work and use them hard, much cheaper than a starter.

That is a bunch of BS. I had a 560 diesel for 15 years and did everything with it including heavy tillage work and never cracked the head. I blew a head gasket once, but every tractor will do that from time to time once you have lots of hours on them.

Their is absolutely NOTHING wrong with a D282(What was in the 560 and early 706's)..... They run pretty good, but are alittle whimpy in a 706.....Anything will crack heads if you run it darn near the red and bring it home, and shut it right down..... ...I AWAYS let our stuff idle for 5 min after coming in from the field..... .Plus it is a good time to grease the equipment for tomorrow!

The big thing to remember with any diesel engine is, if you have been working it hard, let it sit and idle, so it can cool down, before shutting it off.
Actually, that is true even if it runs on gas.

That is BS The older 4 cyl start on gas diesel engines had a bad reputation for this. The newer 6 cyl. direct start diesels had far less problems.
