Farmall 400 @ Auction - Your Thoughts and Estimate

Just want to say, I love this site. I can learn more about tractors here than anywhere else I can think of.

I am considering bidding on a '55 Farmall 400, Gas, narrow front, fast hitch. The condition seems average. I heard it run and it seems ok (to my inexperienced ear). No smoke or noticable clanking. Owner said the Torque Applifier only works in one gear (will search archives after I post here). PTO works but the "lock" on the lever was missing and will need to be replaced. Tin is not great; left engine cowling missing (he said he had it but it was run over at one point), no fenders. No idea about transmission. I didn't drive it as I came from work and didn't want to get my work clothes dirty. I will see more of it at the auction.

My biggest concern is the TA not fully working. Giving what little info here, what are some estimates? I know they will range across the US, but I just want to get a general idea. I was thinking $1000-$1500.

Any thoughts would be appreciated and thanks in advance.

Don't know about yaAll, but in this part of the world (Kansas) that would be a 1000 dollar tractor TOPS. Just stop and think...say 650 to get the TA up to par. Good luck finding the missing sheet metal, and fenders, my guess is you're over 2000, plus what ever else is wrong you don't know yet. A few months ago a 400 sold a few miles from here (I had to work that day).
This was a Diesel, I'd seen it before, and it ran ok, missing some sheet metal parts, wide front end, (don't know about the TA)...I'd only saw it one time at a tractor pull, and it appeared to pull ok....It sold for 750 dollars...I couldn't believe it, my buddy was there and he told me he thought about buying it for me...I wanted to strangle him...I would have probably given 2500 dollars for it. My advise is simply this. Don't get in the frame of mind where you've just GOT TO Have IT. I'll tell you one thing though, a 400 farmall is one H&LL of a tractor, I can't really think of a nicer mid sized tractor, the only thing I can think thats comparable is a 3020JD. Live PTO, dual hydraulics, Wow...wish I had one!!!!

Thanks for your thoughts. It helps keep things in perspective.

I am not new to auctions and am well aware of auction fever. I've seen some people make some bad buys at auctions. I likely have made some myself. The only difference is that I've never made a $2000 mistake...yet.

I will be sure to let everyone know how it turns out.

I agree with what mike said, but, you did not mention the condition of the tires, a new pair of rear tires will run about 5 or 6 hundred bucks, I am thinking about $600 or so for a rebuild kit for the T.A., not including labor.
Most T.A.'s either don't work, or have recently been rebuilt.
The fact that the T.A. doesn't work does not seem to make much differance in the going price at an auction, it should, but people seem to get crazy at an auction. With the information you gave, I would think $1500. should buy the tractor, but probably won't,

I did think about the tires but forgot to mention them until after I posted.

The fronts are new. They look really good. The backs are well worn, but they are worn evenly. There are a few cracks. I didn't measure but I suppose there is 3/4"-1" of tread on them.

As you know it all depends, but if it were me I'd stop bidding at $2000. In the condition you mention it should go in the range you specified. Also as you already know she'll need some work and there is ALMOST always a hidden fault. Let us know how you come out, Mike
