I have two sprayers, an HVLP and a standard spray gun. I now always use the HVLP spray gun. There is just no comparison as there is very little overspray to deal with when using the HVLP gun. I spray the tractors after they are assembled and the only problem I have is not related to the spray pattern as it is the the size of a spray gun. I just finished painting my Farmall B and it seems almost impossible to get paint back in some crevices. I have been using matching spray paint cans to get into the tight spaces as they are smaller. I would definitely suggest an HVLP. I have 2 conventional guns and now 2 HVLP. The HVLP are the only ones I use anymore and give me the best results. It is like anything else, the more you use it the better the results. Don't try to get all the paint on the first time. Start out painting hard to reach areas with several lighter coats, then go to the bigger areas. I really enjoy painting now. By the way, I use a Sharpe Platinum HVLP gun with a 1.4 tip.

Some experienced painters do not like HVLP because it takes a different technique, ie, holding the gun closer and moving slower. For someone who has not painted much, hvlp is far superior to a conventional spray gun. Overspray is something you don't want, you won't get much with hvlp. And, you are not going to get a decent paint job until you remove whatever is in the way.

Ben, before you buy a HVLP gun try one out. I borrowed one and was not impressed. They are alright for finish work but are too slow and you don't get enough overspray to reach into hard to get places. Maybe those guys compleatly dissasemble their tractors but I don't.

I agree with the other 2, go with an HVLP (High Volume, Low Pressure). HVLP guns have the least amount of overspray and wasted paint. Somewhere between $100 and $200 would be a really good gun.

I've been hanging out on Farmall tractors - haying, fixing, getting ready for harvest, etc. etc.

I've had 3 days off in the last month and a half - every other day working on something.

Have been reading the board at least every couple days in the evening or over noon hour, just not enough time to always reply.

Don't hang out at the JD board, don't have a JD tractor yet... :o)

There are lots of them out there. Generally speaking, you should pay $100 to $200 for a decent one. I would stay away from cheap ones, unless you are only painting one tractor for the rest of your life, and also stay away from the expensive ones, as they are not worth the extra money. If you have a compressor that puts out a lot of air, a gravity feed HVLP gun will save paint, and make less overspray and paint dust.
