Clutch Disk - Backwards?

I just replaced the clutch disk and pressure plate on my 41 H and now I'm not getting any travel on the pressure pleate arms. What did I do wrong? Could I have put the clutch disk in backwards? Is that possible?

not to be a smart alleck but when i was putting my clutch and pressure plate in my 756 i had a similiar problem,all it was,was there were small nuts under the pressure plate fingers that they just put in there for shipping thats if you put a new pressure plate in and i think mine was hy-capacity

Newguy: I am not sure about the H, but it is possible on the A, SA, C and SC and with Rockford clutch, which I assume is the type all replacments are by now. I have read the other posts and yes the symptoms you describe are clutch disc in backwards and yes the presure plate bolts will reach. Been there and Done that.

I have done more than a couple of clutches in my day. Just 2 years ago as I had my Farmall 130 all stripped for splitting, 3 friends showed up, and yes in 1.5 hours we had clutch in and tractor back together. Clutch disc was backwards and giving same symptoms as you describe in you second post. Later that day I spent 4 hours changing it all by myself.

did you adjust the free travel in the pedal? a new clutch and pressure plate will require adjustment.

You may simply need to adjust the fingers on the pressure plate. The three screws need to be turned in to move the pivot points ahead. This is to allow adjustment of the fingers as the pressure plate and clutch disk get thinner from wear. I don't believe you can put the clutch disk in backward. The dished "slinger" should be toward the flywheel. If it is backward, the rim of the slinger would interfere with the pressure plate ID.

It seems that the pressure plate is perminently compressed. As I tighten the three screws, the fingers just suck back and make the travel of the clutch pedal that much further. I did what it said in the manual - 1)tighten 3 bolts to compress plate. 2) insert disk & then plate. 3) put in 6 bolts. 4)Remove the three used to compress. So unless the disk in backwards (I don't remember the disk being side specific), I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. If anyone has any suggestions... I would love to hear them. Thanks again.

It is hard to imagine that the six bolts would be long enough to start in the flywheel with the disk in backward. But, if the pressure plate clamps the clutch disk up tight before the six bolts seat the plate assembly to the flywheel, check the disk orientation. The clutch disk is, in fact, side specific. The disk should turn easily before you remove the three bolts compressing the pressure plate springs. The three bolts I was referring to are on the fingers themselves. These are the fine threaded ones with the jam nuts. I'm guessing they're about 3/8" dia. Back the jam nuts out to the bolt heads and turn the bolts in toward the pressure plate (clockwise). You will see the finger begin to swing back toward the thrust bearing. It is important that you adjust all three fingers to the same clearance.
