Need some advise on C axle seal

While the old C was parked on a nice clean concrete floor at the Ozark Epire fair this weekend I noticed the old C has a pretty good drip of oil at the end of the axle housing.I replaced the outer seal and gasket a year or two ago and it would drip about one drop a day. Now that it is on a clean floor it is dripping a drop about every five minutes. To replace the inner seal does the tranmission deck need to come off and the axel out or can I remove the tire and axle housing and slide the new seal over the axel and tap it in place. Just don't want to take more apart then I need to. Thanks for any replys.
PS I guess I could just slide a bigger pan under it.

I have not done the inside seal replacement, but have studied that because I've considered doing it on my C. Best I can tell the axle has to come out because that inside seal goes on from the inside end of the axle. That means the transmission has to be opened in order to get the axle out. I've seen some report that that can be done through the PTO opening without taking off the top. I think that may be true because I've had the PTO off my A-21 shop mule and that hole is pretty big. I believe the axle and rear axle carrier have to come off together because there is a bearing retainer on the inside that holds the bearing and the seal in place. It's going to be a pretty big job. You might consider a can under the drip!

I have replaced the seal before. I pulled the PTO. The hole in the back of the case sometimes is to small to fit your hand in. The last one we did in the shop we had to make the hole bigger.

Well, did not realize it, but looking at the parts book, the C only has a couple small holes at the back of the transmission case where the larger PTO unit bolts on. On the A and Super A which use the same PTO unit, the hole back there is as big as the PTO unit, so there is plenty of room to do what you want. Might be somewhat of a challenge on the C to get the bull gear loose from the axle and then backup on it again just going through the PTO hole.

Your C has a seal on the both ends of the axle, one by the bullgear and an other out by the rear wheel.

Paul there is only one seal on axle in the bearing cap the one you replaced I guess other wise the bearing would not get oiled you proably have a grove in the axle. I haven't made the Fair and proably won't but do they have several old tractors. JIM

The inner seal is the problem, there isn't supposed to be oil at the end of the axle housing. The outer seal is a grease seal.
