I had a Farmall 460 gas. I was never so happy to sell a tractor like i was when i sold it. It's an all around poor tractor. The clutch is to small. Only 10 1/2 inches, the same as a Super H. I had to replace the clutch many times. The engine has no low end power. I had to replace axle bearings on one side. A tractor axle is a poor place for ball bearings! The fast hitch is nice if you have or can find fast hitch implements. You better off buying a tractor with a real 3 point hitch. The TA is free wheeling in low (TA) If you have hills, the wife or kids driving tractor. The free wheeling is not good.

I have a 460 gas also and love it. It is used mostly as a loader tractor, but also runs a fast hitch blade once in a while. It starts instantly everytime and has been the best running tractor I've ever had. My TA is out, but who's isn't! If the one you are looking at is out, it still can be used on the high side (lever forward) as mine has been for 10+ years. As the last guy said, if the rearend hasn't failed yet, it's not going to. If you plan on pulling the tractor really hard, then maybe I'd be concerned but otherwise it is just a 40 year old problem that the image of the 460/560 tractors can't seem to shake off. I'd say the price is pretty good, but you won't know for sure until you hear it run. As a loader tractor, fuel consumption is average for a tractor of that horsepower and size. Good luck

Good tractor, rear end failures were from guys adding too much weight to pull too big a plow. Pick a plow you can use in 3rd gear and it should last.

2 words to described this tractor(gas model anyway: glorified "H". Same trans, rearend with a torque amplifier. No good lugging power with the 6 cyl. engine, total fuel hog, gut-less. I had a 58' model and got rid of it after two years. Sure didn't feel like 47 drawbar horsepower when driving other brands comparible models. Many have had hydraulic problems. IH recalled many in 58'-59' due to rear end failures. After the upgrade the dealers put a triangle stamp on the serial number plate to identify it as upgraded. Nearly ruined(or did) IH's reputation. The diesels are very hard to start even in the summer. On the plus side the live PTO and hydraulics were nice, and I didn't have a TA problem like so may have had. Good hydraulic capacity, mine had a Kelley loader on it. Nice smooth powersteering and big steering wheel and I always preferred the fasthitch to the 3 pt.

I recently "adopted" my late father's 460 gas tractor and am again familiarizing myself with it after 25 years or so of not being around it. I would not characterize the 460 as being gutless, nor would I label it a gas hog. Perhaps the fuel hungry and gutless perception of the 460 is due to pulling over-matched implements with it such as a disk. As a matter of fact, looking at the Nebraska Tractor Test data, the 460 gas is in the top 10% in the economy ratings. Quite the contrary, doing normal chores with the old girl has shown that it is rather thrifty with respect to fuel usage in my opinion. I am also quite surprised at how nimble it is maneuvering it in tight areas with its nice power steering and row crop lay out despite the rather longish chassis. My father did tell me at one time that there was a "weak" rear-end problem with the 460, and that it had been corrected in later versions. As far as I know, my 460 is the original rear end design, and we have not had problems with it. Glorified H? Hardly.

Tom I have a 1959 460D yes you have to use the glow plugs to stsrt it in summer even if it has only been shut off for only a few mins. But when it is running you have never heard a smoother running engine. Good glow plugs and a good starter are the secret to starting. Gutless I don't think so I have pulled a 7ft. roam offset plow to the axle in 2nd gear on 2&1/4 gal. per hr. and left and right New Holand Rakes on 1/2 gal per hr. I have a 706 and a 756 both with the German 310 Diesel and my 30 year old son will drive the 460 over them any day. I have pulled a 12ft. New Holand 495 haybine with ease and 605F Vemeer big round baler. I have had it on a dino and turned 63HP. at 540 pto rpm. If it has a factory IHC wide front cut about 1 & 1/2 inches out of each guide arm on the spindles and it will reduce turning radius a bunch.

I dont have a problem starting my 460 diesel even when its 10 below zero. just hold the glow plugs in for about a minute and a half when its cold out side then hold them untill the motor smooths out and it runs fine.

As for the rear end problems, if after 45+ years of use its still working I don't think you going to have to worry about it now. As for power and use it is much more comparable to a M then a H.

I see you are talking about a gas model, it is going to seem kind of fuel hungry. If it runs as well as it looks the price is actually extremely good. Most of the ones I see sell in Kansas go for $2500 to $3500. I have never seen one sell that had been refurbished.

Just talked to the owner on tne phone ,going over to check it out tomorrow. He say's the Rear end ,Transmission and Clutch are all working fine. IH wide front end is tight ,Has fenders ,tires are matched in fair shape with typical cracking
Motor was recently rebuilt starts and runs great ,no oil burning /smoke ,good strong pulling tractor.
Has a IH 2 bottom plow and a grader blade to go with it .I forgot to ask about the TA .
Thanks to every one for all the help,
Tom
