Evaluating A - what to look for?

An old guy up the road has a 1940 A he's trying to sell for $1500. It has hydraulics and a real nice looking front snow blade. Tires are good, seemed to run OK, has typical leaks - probably valve cover gasket and around the steering box. It needs paint and decals. The tin is really good - even the grille was OK.

Are there cronic problems to look closely for on this model? Any idea if the plow could be original? It is in great shape, but looks to be about the same age. Could I find cultivators for this easily?

What about price? Has anyone out there recently bought an A for comparison? Does the plow add much in value?

Thanks for any help. I worked with H's a lot when I was a kid, but never had experience with anything smaller. Our little tractors were AC's.

Check for loose steering. "A"s are notorious for this. It can be remidied easily "sometimes".

Tim: You have good advise already, except no one has mentioned if that tractor has factory hydraulics it will be a lot newer than 1940. Factory hydraulics weren't installed until 1947, when the tractor became Super A.

The snow blade adds some value as these little tractors are monsters when it comes to plowing snow. I have two rules when looking at a Farmall A, SuperA, 100, 130 and 140 If there are no welding or brazing on castings and if sheet metal is good thay are basically a good tractor. If those items are bad you have little more than a parts tractor.

I just bought a 1952 Super A for $1500. It sounds to be in basically the same condition. It has only the mounted cultivators with it. It has a very old 3 point conversion, and the drawbar has disappeared somewhere along the way. Runs good, a little blowby from the breather under load but not loosing power, all hydraulics work good. It has a few electrical issues, but nothing very expensive to repair. For my area (South Central Virginia) it was a good deal. Around here, offset Farmalls usually go for between $2000 and $4000 for a working tractor and $4000 and up for restorations. They are really popular with the tobacco farmers around here. From what little exposure I've had, seems to me value depends a lot on where you are located. Hope this was of some help.

Of note that I can think of from my '41 A...

Check for welds around the front-end to engine bolster. Mine has a weld there. Check the front axle carefully. The spindles on mine have be welded and reinforced. Check the seal on the tranny tower. Water can leak in there. Check the tranny oil if you can.
