If the starter is bound against the ring gear, I have found only three things that work to free it. One is to loosen the starter mounting bolts enough to just wiggle the starter- does not even require disconnecting the battery cable. I carry a wrench for this purpose on the tractor- a 140. The other thing is to put the tractor in 4 th gear and push/pull it BACKWARD. The third is to take crowbar and turn the engine backward through the handhole under the clutch. The third one is very inconvenient. If jammed, the hand crank will not turn it nor will pulling it forward in a forward gear. Those things only jam it tighter and do additional damage to the already damaged flywheel ring gear and starter drive.

As I said I don't remember the Super A ever locking but the H was notorious and I have unlocked it 100's of times with the crank.

This might be too obvious, but any chance the battery is dead?

I don't remember the old Super A doing this but the H was notorious on what we called the starter locked Try putting the tractor in high gear and rock it if this is the problem it will release. Using the crank if you had one also will work. When we used the Super A and H a crank on each was standard equipment.

You might try this, I go this info from someone one here when I had this happen to my Super A. If you have not put it back on yet, put it back then try her out. On mine the starter gear binded against the ringgear. (I need to replace the starter drive as soon as I can, that's what caused it) When I removed the starter, obviously it unbinded (i think thats a word) the gears, and when I put it back together, it worked fine. When it happened to me, I tried to start it once, then it did nothing at all. I thought my battery had died as my generator currently is not charging. So tried to jump it off, no change. Came to the forums for advise and got this tip, it worked.
