Sometimes my F-12 starts on the first or second crank and other times you can wear yourself out without getting it to pop.New autolite plugs, new coil, new points, new condenser, and new wires, also rebuilt fuel pump.It started & ran fine for A few days. Now it`s getting harder to start all the time.Any ideas? Thanks for any help,Fred.

I have an F-12 and F-14 both hard to start. I talked to a man that had built a starter that works through the PTO he is Dal Wolf. He sent me the info for free and I used it to build a little different verson. Mine sits on the draw bar and hooks to the PTO with a universal jount and coupler. It starts the tractor very fast and looks good with the cover I made for it. No one can tell what it is and they always ask me what is in the box at the shows. It can be removed in about 5 minutes or less and you can put it on another tractor if you want. I have about $150 in it including the battery. If you want to know more email me at mmilner12@chartertn.net. I will have the tractor at the Portland show if all goes well. I had it at the Denton NC show. If it is hard to start all the time this is an option. I have an F-20 nad F-30 that start good by hand so that is the way I do it but the 12 and 14 are just too hard. Thanks Fred.

I have a F-12 that actually starts well.
Champion W-18plugs,New coil, points, condenser, good wires. I like to run the carb. as lean as possible on main and idle jet. I also let it idle a little on the fast side. There is a screw above the choke plate that alot of people leave out to dribble fuel into for priming. Put it back in! Set the points at .013 the plugs at .022! I never let the tractor run out of gas when shuting off, I turn the mag off. All fuel lines are routed as originally designed including the Iron tank in the hood. To start this cold or hot I retard the mag, throttle 1/2,choke full on. Pull crank 2 times. Then choke 1/2-will usually start on 1 or 2 pulls after that. Good Luck hope this helps.

That is interesting and of at least some comfort to myself. I have encountered the same problem so at any rate you are not alone. I have pretty much traced it to be some sort of electrical problem but I have not dialed it in farther than that. I just got back my magneto from being rebuilt yesterday but have not had the time to try and mount and restart my F-12. I was told the coil was totally shot and the magnet was quite week.

For what it's worth I will also throw out the fact that I've been told by a couple of people who have quite a bit of expertise in the area of electrical problems that a starting problem like that will tend to foul the plugs and once fouled they are greatly reduced in their effectiveness even if cleaned. I can't speak from tested experience on that but I strongly suspect that such is the case. I am eager to try and get mine started but I don't think that will be until next week.

Must be a hex on these little tractors!Mine always does the same thing.I can go out there right now and shell fire right up,and it been sitting a week or so,but go out htere tomorrow and she wont hit a lick, wait two hours or so,and then shell decide to start.Like my granpappy use to say,"I pulled on that crank so much I done run it hot!An' she still wont fire up!"

Not sure what might be getting you, but I had a wierd thing happen on my F-12 that you might check. When I painted it, I plugged up the tiny breather hole in the top of each gas cap and it created a vacuum that would make it hard to pump gas. Try starting it with the gas caps unscrewed a little (listen for a whoosh when you loosen them).

Better yet, first check to see that the carb has fuel. Undo the drain screw slightly on the rear carb bottom and see if gas comes out. If it does, this is probably not your issue.

I have also found that the points inside the magneto are prone to getting some sort of glaze on them. Just a piece of index card rubbed through the plates a couple of times fixes it temporarily.

Good luck!

I put hotter plugs in my F14 and noticed it started better. They do seem to need a lot of cranking if they sit around for a week or two with out running them.
