Hi,
Tractor is new to us, started, but ran rough and needed a tune up. Compression check showed all 4 cylinders above 100.

We got the tune up parts installed: cap, rotor, points, new plugs, new wires. It has a magneto. We got a video-tape on how to do a tuneup and a workshop manual. We got new "crush washers" for the spark plugs too.
We are having problems setting the timing. We are correctly gapped at .020 when points are open. I see the MAG turns clockwise. My question is, should the points be "closed" or open as the mag-rotor is pointing towards to cap ? I'm thinking, they should be closed and they create the spark "as they open"...as it is, we are not getting any spark. Is this correct ?

Also - any good tips on how to set the engine at TDC ? We can not see the "DC" on the flywheel thru the bottom inspection plate to line up with the big "tick" mark.

Thanks in advance
Tom Hudson

My Super A flywheel does not have the DC. Only a very small mark. You REALLY need to find that mark. Clean off the flywheel, use a light and turn it with a big screw driver, it is there. Took me at least 30 minutes to find the one on mine.

Since you said that you put new points in it, you had to remove the cover under the rotor. There is a gear train in there that you probably moved and got it out of time, it's easy to do. You need to put #1 cylinder at top dead center and set the rotor at the post for #1 sparkplug to get it back in time.
BTW, the point gap for a magneto should be .013. 20 thousanths is the gap for a distributor ignition.

Someone may have taken the little cover off under the rotor and got the gears out of time. There is, I believe, a beveled tooth on the little one, and a timing mark on the larger gear. Carefully mount the mag in a vise with a layer of thick cloth to protect it from jaw marks and turn it in the normal direction of rotation. (A pair of "locking pliers" attached to one of the impulse lugs is a good way to do this.) The points should be closed as the impulse spring winds up, and snap open as the impulse coupling snaps. The timing of the little gears is so that the outer contact on the rotor is next to one of the spark plug wire terminals when this occurs.

The gap for the points is set with the points setting on one of the cam lobes. When the points are not riding on a lobe they will be closed.
