We bought a W4 from the original owner,,its a 1948. It has a starter on it but has never been used. The guy said they bought it and it was delivered in the winter, battery froze and broke and they couldnt afford to buy a battery after spending all the money on the tractor and such (maybe he is pullin my leg here) But anyway, I need to repair the starter , I took the battery box off and the 2 bolts out of the starter, but I see no way of getting it out, the rear of the starter hits the transmission housing before the starter nose is out of the hole,,,any ideas???? Anyone wanna buy a W4 that needs starter work? ,,,,Jim

I took a bolt out of the trans case and with that and holding my mouth just right I was able to get the starter off.

I have a W4 that is having starter trouble also and have just been cranking it to start because of the trouble getting the starter off. If the tractor has a belt pulley unit on it, it will have to be removed and probably the gas tank to get the pulley unit off. With all that out of the way it will come off, it is a very tight fit and will have to be posistioned just right to get in and out. Good luck.

Sounds like a lot of work,, I bought the tractor to resell it,,,I have posted it on the YT classifieds, I dont have time to mess with it right now so I think I will shove it in the corner and hopefully sell it to someone who has more time,,Thanks,Jim
