disc harrow on Farmall M?

I've acquired a Farmall M with the rear wheels set 7' wide, presumably for two row cultivation. However, I'd like to use a disc harrow as wide or wider than the tractor. Can an M lift a 7 or 8 foot harrow without front weights? If not, how does one attach weights? If I sacrifice two row cultivation for a smaller harrow, what tips do y'all have for narrowing the wheels? Thanks very much.

The rear wheels are quite adjustable.
Loosen the clamp bolts, set the brakes, and jack up that side of the tractor. Slide the wheel to where you need it and tighten it all back down again. Works best if the bolt heads are pointing up.

Simon: I agree with Jimmy, get a good wheel controled trailer disk. It's not that disks are all that heavy, but rather that the weight is spread out wide and far behind your hitch point. The only way you can disk with mounted equipment is straight ahead, whereas the trailer will disk around turns. If you are seriously going to do good tillage be it disk or cultivator then you should never travel anywhere on field with implement raised.

Simon,I have the old disc we used to pull with our M,It's about 10 ft with about 18in discs. I pull it with my H and it works fine for what I do with it any more. I pull it in 2nd or 3rd gear depending on the ground. If I can remember right we pulled it in 3rd or 4th with the M.This disc you back up to release the lock pull forward to set the degree of cut and let go of the lock.It is a very nice disc harrow but it is not a transport harrow, when you needed to move it you just set it straight and down the road you went slow as a snail.

Get a pull type disc harrow and you won't need any front weights. Should be able to pull a light 10ft. easy, plowing disc 8ft.
