I posted a message about a week back that asked where I could find a filter but now I was wondering something different. My neigbor has a '60 model Ford 601 Workmaster which he has switched the old element oil filter out for a new model filter that fit on the base of the block. In other words the old element filter screwed on at the bottom of the base before the cover was applied and he found a new model filter that just matches right up with the threads on the base and screws right on without having to apply the fitler cover. Is there anyway this would work with an M? Never changed oil before on one because I've only had this one about 2 weeks and was too young to understand what my Grandfather was doing when he changed it one his Super M. Could the Air filter be switched out to make it easier for changing like this also.. I know I'm probably reaching really far out there for a good ansewer on this but I was just wondering. Thank you for your time again.

I have spin-on oil filters on both my M and SM. I got the bases several years ago from my local CarQuest auto parts outlet. I have no idea if they still carry them, but they were realtively inexpensive at the time.

Somebody mentioned in another post recently that a spin-on oil filter adaptor is available for H's. M's, etc. I think from your Case-I.H. dealer. I have had no experience with these, but you might want to check it out, although I don't know why you would want to, the original element type filters are readily available, and as long as you change the O-ring gasket each time you change the filter, you will not have any problems.
As far as the air filter goes, it is an oil bath type filter, to my knowledge, there is no dry element that will replace it, unless you want to completely replace the entire unit and adapt something in its place. again, I don't know why you would want to, with proper maintenance, it will give you no trouble, and is more effective than a dry filter.

I just went to my CaseIH dealer today and they told me that They knew a guy that cut off the intake pipe from the air filter to the carb and just put a K&N on the end. Will this give the engine too much air?? I'm just wondering.. Not to say that I will do any of this to my M but I was just wanting to get some opinions from you guys.. Thanks again.

No such thing as too much air. Question is, will that K&N filter out all of those really fine microscopic dust particles?

IMHO the K&N will NOT filter out all the dirt. But then neither will the oil bath air filter. A large enough pleated paper element is The Best filter, gets 99.9+% of all the dirt if installed and serviced properly. Under certain conditions oil bath as little as 90%, but never much over 96-97%. The biggest reason why engines last so much longer now is the improved filtering capability of the oil & air filters.
