Ive been thinking of putting a turbo charger on my H. That would sound great on it, But would it give me more power? Unlike my powerstroke my H I knows idle is governed by the fuel pulled through the carb, would the turbo push to much air through the carb causing high uncontroled idle?

Turbo boost is one thing to a Diesel, entirely another to a gasoline engine. The Diesel is difficult to hurt with turbo boost. A gasoline engine may not tolerate even 10 pounds of boost. Takes an expert to do it right on the gasoline engine.

Back in the mid 60s my FIL put a Corvair turbo on his pullin 'H'. It worked Great but only because the engine had ben Balanced aand stroked and race cam and single tube intake and exaust and would turn 5000 RPMs. If you cannot get high RPMs you get nothing from the turbo.

That's a bunch of bunk, Caterpiller makes good use of turbos on engines governed at 1800 rom.

You Might think it is bunk but I was there and You were not. It Is a gas tractor and the turbo was intended to be used on an engine that operated between 700rpn at idel and 6000rpm red line. JIM

Jim: You clearly misunderstood my message, I was in no way suggesting what you were doing was a bunch of bunk. What I said was the statment you made about turbos not working at low rpm, and that my friend is a bunch of BUNK.

More trouble than it's worth. Definetly not a "bolt up" job. You would probably end up cutting a hole in the hood, as it would not fit underneath. Then you would need to convert to a dry-type air filter, as the turbo would suck the oil right out of your oil bath air cleaner. Next you need to plumb in lubrication lines- run a pressure line from the engine's main oil galley to the turbo bearings, then find a place for the oil return line. The M&W aftermarket turbo set-up commonly found on 806, 826, and 856 tractors even had an oil filter that the oil passed through on it's way from the engine to the turbo. Now, the one thing that many people do not realize about turbos- they do absolutley nothing unless you have a load on the engine. To answer your other question- it would not cause uncontrolled idle, because the throttle lever controls the govoner, which controls engine speed by moving the throttle valve in the carb. The govoner senses and controls speed through a system of flyweights and by the amount of spring tension you place on it by moving the throttle lever.

Ummm.. personally... it would be a bit expensive. And it would mess up your horsepower to weight ratio. There are better tractors (read: heavier) to do this with. Just my opinion.
