1941 Farmall A throttle problem

I have a 1941 Farmall A which is giving me a little problem. I bought this tractor which was supposed to have been rebuilt. It ran good and I drove it a few miles to my house (throttle worked fine). When I got the tractor home, I found out the engine leaked every type of fluid possible. Turns out the man did not replace any of the old gaskets when he had the engine apart. I replaced all of the gaskets /seals and reassembled the engine. NO LEAKS!!! The problem now is there is no throttle response. The governor spring is fine, and I adjusted the rod between the governor and the carb (pin falls into clevis with throttle wide open, carb wide open and governor lever fully toward carb). I backed out the high speed adjustment screw on the governor (did not make a difference). The linkage is free with no binding. If you put the throttle lever full forward, nothing happens unless you push the rod between the governor and carb. The engine revs up and the governor pulls the rod back. I am running out of things to check. HELP PLEASE.

The governor on the "A" is pretty simple. When the throttle is advanced the governor spring pulls on an arm. That arm is attached to a rod with pin. That rod goes trough the governor and comes out the carb side. If that pin were sheared it might act like you are describing. The arm the governor spring is attached to may offer enough resistance to advance the carb throttle plate when the tractor is not running. When the tractor is running the governor weights would hold the arm at idle. When the tractor is running if there is a lot of resistance to manually advancing the linkage between the governor and carb I would guess that the pin is not sheared. Just a thought,

Sounds like the governor spring is stretched, broken or very weak. Or maybe some of the linkage is broken. If the spring is weak or broken, the governor weights will have nothing to work against and will immediately close the throttle to idle.

I would be suspicious of something missing or broke in the governor. Did you have the governor off? Are you sure all the pieces are in and set correctly. They can be tricky to set back on straight.Hope someone else here can give you some better advice.Good Luck and enjoy the "A".

Yes, I did have the governor off of the engine to replace the gasket. I did take the governor off again to check everything and could not find a problem. One thing I forgot to write in my original message was that with the engine off, the throttle works fine (carb adjusts from idle to full throttle with the linkage). When the engine is running, it idles no matter where the throttle is placed and will only accelerate when I manually push the rod between the governor and carb. Any more ideas???
