I need to harvest about 1/4 acre of garlic and was thinking about buying a old potato digger to do the job. I saw a ground driven type digger that has metal rods linked together to form a moving conveyer. The rods catch the pototoes and let the soil fall through. I was wondering how deep this type of digger was designed to dig. My garlic is about 4-5" deep. I'd be pulling it with a Super A.

The potatoes that machine was digging are much more than 4 inches deep. I think our potato harvester, which had a digger section just like the one you describe, would run about 10-12 inches deep. Like Hugh, says, though, the chain sections can be kind of expensive. If you live in potato country, check with potato farmers to see if they have old chain they want to get rid of.

Pete: Do you have center mount cultivator for the Super A . If so send me an e mail and I can send you a photo of what I use. Those old chain diggers can run a lot of money if chain is worn. By chain I am refering as to how those bars interlock.

I don't know about how the potato digger would work but 1/4 acre of garlic sounds like a great deal of garlic! Wow!
