I am converting my 6 volt to 12. I built me a self exciting delco altenator A new battery, 12 volt coil. my question is do I need some kind of resistor? is there Special points and condencer? also It is hard to get in gear when it is running it wants to grind. Any help will be greatly aperacited Thank you tim

Make sure you have a 12 Volt coil WITH INTERNAL RESISTOR. Then you don't have to mess with a separate resistor.
