I have the frontend taken apart on my Super A and was wondering what you guys generally do when you reassemble the spindle tubes. my thought was to at least primer the inside of the main tube and both spindle tubes to prevent having them rust up again, considering I spent the better part of a week getting the whole thing freed up. Any tips appreciated.

Scotty: I used grease on my 130, spray can of rust paint on my Super A and a spray can of graphite on my 140. 50 years from now I will let you in on which worked best. I supose we could check in 25 just in case we may be a bit shakey on foot later on.

Primer is pouras (sp?)anyway it will let moisture through and the metal will rust. I primed and finish painted mine then assembled with a liberal coating of grease. Sort of messy but I figured that it will help seal out the air and moisture and even if it got hard over the years it would be easier to break loose than two pieces of metal rusted together. I really did this for the next owner as I don't plan on ever changing the width on mine.

Lance, Thanks, a little bit of grease sounds like a good idea!

I went through this very problem yesterday and today. My axle tube hand been damaged years ago, sloppily welded so I found another tube and one knee extension. Since I wasn't re-using the tube, I cut the good extension out. Even with a torch, it was still a job. THe way the axle is constructed, dirt, moisture, etc. can get inside through the end of the axle. Anyway I liberally coated mine with grease, after cleaning off the biggest part of the rust with a side grinder. The axle hadn't been widened out since it was assembled in 1948. I don't have any plans to ever touch it again, but hopefully the grease will help slow down rust.
