International A smoking

I got a 1946 International A and it smokes a little gray smoke and uses some oil--maybe half a quart every 4-6 hours. I just use it every couple of weeks in the summer to mow 2-3 acreas so the oil consumption is not a big inconvenience. I assume new rings are in order (how can I check?). Is this a job for shop or can a newbie do it? Thanks

Considering your useage I wouldn't worry about it. It will probably run that way for the next 20 years if all you do is mow a couple of acres every couple of weeks.

Best way to check the rings is by doing a compression check.

Newbie?? New to tractor mechanics or new to mechanics? That can be a hard question to answer but these are probably the simplest engines ever made to work on, if you have tools, a clean place to work, the desire to learn and a good set of shop manuals for your A I think most anyone could rebuild the engine. There is always a lot of help on this board too if you run into something that's not explained in the manuals.

Done about everything but tear into the engine of a tractor (paint, replace seals, etc.). Do have shop and some tools. Thought it might be a good learning experience--but do not want to learn too much the hard way!! Thanks
