Michael: Basically, PTO's come in three flavors. A traditional PTO, such as you'll find on many old tractors, works off the transmission, and uses the same clutch as the transmission. When you push the clutch to disengage the gears and stop the tractor, you also stop the PTO. The next development was the "live" pto, which often had a second clutch set on the same clutch pedal as the transmission. You could push the clutch in part way to stop the tractor, and then push it in further to stop the PTO. This is handy for such applications as baling and mowing, where you need to stop the tractor to let the implement catch up with a large wad of hay or something similar. Today, most tractors have an "independent" PTO, which is wholly separate from the clutch pedal--it has its own clutch, and can be stopped and started without regard to the forward progress of the tractor. Note that the terms "live" and "independant" PTO's are often used interchangeably, which may be technically incorrect, but basically is just saying that you can stop the tractor and the PTO will continue to function.

PTO is the splined shaft at the rear of the tractor for powering drawn machines.
In the old days this shaft was gear driven off the transmision and worked with the same clutch. What we call "live PTO" is a system that uses a seperate clutch that enables the tractor forward motion to be stoped while the PTO continues to operate. The same principals apply to tractor hydralic systems too.
