Just aquired a '41 H and it runs a little rough. Sputter and popping at idle and certainly under load.(sounds like the old johnny poppers) Also the 6-volt battery doesn't seem to hold a charge for longer than 2 weeks. I got a multimeter on the charging system and it is working fine. I don't know that much about Mags so I am thinking there is something wrong there. She will start hard, like the battery is down, after a couple of weeks and runs with a sputter. Reading thru my manuals etc. I suspect the magneto a little. What do you think?

Mine did the exact thing last week. It was running great, I was adjusting the carb and then it started to sound like a JD. My carb was just rebuilt, all new plugs, wires, points, etc. I cleaned up the new plugs, dressed the points and still sounded like a JD. I then decided to take the carb apart. I cleaned out EVERY part of the carb., I didn't see anything other than some particles in the screen. Put it together (used an IH carb. kit$$)and it sounds great!!!. The only problem I had was the carb started to leak where the optional plug drain is so I put in a brass plug and that solved that. Then yesterday the needle valve didn't work and I had a puddle on the floor, I put the old aftermarket needle and seat back in and I am fine. From what i am told the smallest speck of dirt can cause problems and I believe it.

There should be no connection between the battery and the magneto, as the mag is self-energizing. In other words, the mag isn't the cause of your battery losing charge.

I would start with fresh plugs and points. Also check out and clean the fuel system as Lloyd said too.
There is no connection between a low/discharged battery and the ignition system when you have a magneto. If the battery won't hold a charge, it's either being drained by something or the battery is bad.

PAt: pretty tough to tell but have ruled out the fuel system, carb is clean and flow is good? How about good solid wires and fesh plugs?that mag is a good one and fairly trouble free.look under the cap and see how dirty it is,clean the rotor button. Can you hear it snap when it turns over? How about a few more details?

I will check those things. Wires look ok. I will pull the plugs and check the gap etc. Fuel looks clean and good flow to carb (except some rust particles in sediment bowl. I think the tank has small amount of rust). When I put the 6volt quick charger/starter charger on it, she cranks right up and I can hear the clicking. No Smoke at all, but is alot louder than I expected.
