I hope that someone can help us out. We recently purchased a 48 M model for doing odd jobs around the farm. The PTO shaft does not fully engage. The lever assembly works fine, but the shaft does not extend as far as it should so it ends up slipping. Does anyone know how to lengthen the shaft. There has to be a way to screw it out longer.

Park the tractor pointed downhill and pull the PTO shaft out of the rear of the tractor. check for wear etc. My 39 M did not work at all, pulled it out freed up a few parts and now I am bailing with it. good luck.

When you pull the pto unit out, check to see if the thin metal spacers are still in there between the pto unit and the tranny housing.Take those out and you can buy some time like that.Check the ends of the pto shaft and the shaft in the tranny and if youre lucky, you can get by with repalcing the shaft.

We have already taken the pto shaft out. Since This is the first time we have owned a tractor that did not have a live pto we are a bit unsure as to how to proceed. Both ends of the coupler look a bit beaten up, but is appears that they are not fully connecting. If you keep the tractor on level ground there is no problem. Once you start working on a hill or any slight incline it begins to slip. Any thing else that you could suggest would help
