My '53 cub is blowing water out the overflow. After 1-2 hours of mowing, it takes 1/2 to 3/4 gallon to refill the radiator. It was just overhauled last winter, and it lost water before the overhaul, too. Does anyone have any ideas why this is happening?

I'm filling the radiator to the top, just below the overflow and the cap. My service manual says the cooling system holds 13 quarts, and after running 1 to 2 hrs, it's lost as much as a gallon. The bulk of the water comes out as soon as the engine heats up to what I would say is normal operating temperature (there's no guage). Also, water comes out when traveling downhill. When I bought the tractor, it had a pressure cap on the radiator, but I replaced it with a flat cap like I've seen on other cubs. Should I use a pressure cap?

If the coolant level drops low enough when the tractor is hot that you cannot see coolant in the radiator, there is really a problem. The circulation in a thermosiphon system is fully dependent on a full circuit of coolant at the top of the system. Next time it is necessary to add coolant, measure carefully. Anything more than a quart is cause for concern.
