yesterday while cutting hay the hydro speed contol started acting up. from the neutral position, as you pushed the lever forward the tractor did not move for a few seconds, then suddenly lurched forward and then operated at that speed okay. but it's doing this all the time now. the oil level is good. hydro was rebuilt about 5 years ago. any suggestions where to start looking?

No experience with the 656 - but other hydros I have had trouble with, the most common problem was low fluid, or filter plugged - both easy and cheap to check & replace.

Smirkey I would you have a valve that is not working just right could be deceleration valve or maybe servo valve, but I would get it check out.

A little off the subject, but what would happen to my (oh no) John Deere Garden Tractor if I put 80 or 90 weight in it's slipping Hydrostatic Transmission?? Would it quiet it down and work better?? Thanks, Cmore

No, you really need to put in what the manufacturer designed it for - If I remember right, Ford spec automatic transmission fluid. I did change mine out a few years back, and used GM Dextron, has worked OK. Be sure to change out the filter too!

I worked for a farmer in highschool that had a 656 that did that exact same thing. He always swore it was a dirty filter on the hydro lines. He always had pretty good equipment that ran well, so I tend to think he knew what he was talking about. Anyway it is an easy and inexpensive place to start.
