I have always left my brakes locked together on my 300U. The other day I released the lever that locks them because I wanted to brake a wheel that way slipping. It was then that I noticed that I don't have any left brake at all. Whats invovled in fixing these brakes? Should I get a manual or are they simple enough to tear right into them. Thanks

Never been into mine, but I think Bob's comments are accurate. If you haven't already, I'd recommend checking the adjustment before tearing into the guts - it's mighty cheap, and that's all that was wrong the the brakes when I bought my 300U. Good luck.

Not sure if the utility tractor brakes are much different than the row-crop brakes. I just tore into mine and sanded the steel disks and braking surfaces, cleaned and lightly oiled the mechanism and steel balls (you'll see them when you take it apart) and put it back together.

The housing is kinda' heavy so be careful when removing the bolts around the edges that hold it onto the tractor. Also, try not to breathe the rust and dust you'll find. I thought it was pretty easy to service them (I have a 450 row crop).

Hi there, On my folks farm we had an H-350-300-450-&460. A few neighbors cubs too. All of these brakes are the same, just different sizes. The cubs are real little and the 450 is pretty big. Back out the adjustment "nut" be carefull of the threads. Unhook the petal return spring and then take out all of the bolts. some tractors the bolts are all the same length and some have two longer ones ETC. Best thing is to carefuly lay them out as you remove. Normal stuff to do with brakes, clean out the wasp nest- mud- rust- cow poop Etc.
NOW>>>!!!...DO NOT ROUGH UP THE METAL PLATES!!! You will end up with the worst set of lock up brakes you would ever want! We used to take one of those little hand sand blasters and lightly dust the surface of the disk plates to brake the glaze. The material on these should be a good 1/4 inch thick with a nice dust grove in them.Wire wheel the insides of the plates and roll the balls in some hi-temp bearing grease. JUST A LITTLE. When you pull on the mechanics of the two plates it should move nice and free. Spray the inner surfaces on "drum" and tractor casting and plates with rotor cleaner. Put it all together and here is how we adjusted them. With the return spring off,and just a gental push with your hand, you want about 1/2 inch free play from the pedal bar to the front lip on the platform. "Where your feet and all the mud go" Hook up the return springs, and make sure they are good.Drive down you dirt lane ,"slowly at first"and with the little "Bar" or petal lock in place balance things so the tractor stops straight. You should be able to LOCK UP your wheels. Enjoy!
