I did it....I ventured over to the "dark side" this weekend: Went to the NY State 2 Cylinder Expo in Canandaigua. Was an opportunity to see what the "green men" have been up to lately. Saw the most Deere tractors I've ever seen in one place before - I'd guess close to 1,000 tractors all together.

Anyway despite the color of the tractors, it was a good show! Punch below for a few pix...

Bob-
Great photos.

You didn't go to the "dark side" anymore than those JD people and other people did when they went to the Red Power roundup in Bloomsburg.

I think there are a of of people out there who like all brands of old iron. People have their favorites but as for me, I never met an old tractor that I didn't like.

Bob,
I attend many of the shows you do, and you ALLWAYS bring back GREAT photos to share with those who cannot attend. As the name implys I'm all red in the letter series department, but the 10,20,30 series green I have a soft spot for. That 6030 is one AWSOME machine it humbles you to stand next to it. I almost took off my Farmall hat in respect for that big green machine. Just imagine hitching a set of moldboards to that and breakin' some sod!!!!! Keep up the photos everyone enjoys them!!

Bob I am 61 years old grew up a IHC person learned to drive a B about seven years old grew up on a Super A, H, And F20. In 1996 I gave up farming am now driving a local night del. truck, and will proabley have to work the rest of my life still have 460D, 706D, and 756D. Would have nothing else but IHC or Case IH. But I do love to hear those old 2 lungers run the harder the pull the better.

Bob: Thanks again for the good photos as always. Not sure I agree with the trip to the dark side, especially coming from a relatively new Moline owner. I was at a show and pull here in Ilderton, just north west of London, yesterday. Molines dominated that pull. There was only 1 IH pulled and the operator belonged to the idiot club.

There was one guy that impressed me. He pulled a MH 44 diesel as well as MH 44 gas in same class. The two tractors were within 30 lbs in weight. I forget the figures on his pulls but they were close and as well they were clearing real estate for him. He had those two old Masseys working like clock work and he knew every inch of them. I like to watch a guy like him pull, I don't care what he is running.

Thanks for your comments guys...

Hugh - I'm sure you understand my "dark side" comment was strictly tongue in cheek! I enjoy the green tractors and their proud owners just as much as I do the red (and recently MM prairie gold...). I happened to grow up around Farmall Supers, hence that's my preference now. (Incidentally the farm where I help part-time is 100% Deere. They operate a fleet of 15+ tractors ranging from 3020's to 8300's and 8960's...all of my non-show tractoring is with JD green equipment.)

Jimmy - Yup - nothing matches the sound of a 2 cylinder pulling hard! And the music of a half dozen R's, along several 80's, 820's, etc all idling together is beyond description...

OLDREDIRON - I agree...that 6030 was truly humbling...what a piece of machinery! Unfortunately judging from the quality of the restoration (it's flawless!) likely the hardest work it will ever again see is climbing on and off a trailer at tractor shows.

Bob: A guy I know back in Nova Scotia has one of the last threshers built by IH. I just forget the capacity but he told me the last year his uncle used it they had a new 656 diesel. His uncle found a rear pto mount belt pulley that would fit 656, and they threshed with a wagon load of sheaves pulled up on each side and 4 of the most able men they could find pitching into the self feeder. The 656 incidently just purred. I doubt if too many 656's were ever hooked to a thresher.

He restored this thresher and had a John Deere 70 diesel, which due to parts he didn't have quite ready for show and threshing event in 2001. A guy showed with a R diesel and was all keyed up to put his R on thresher. We tried to have 2 wagons pulled up for that one, bunch of us wanted to hear the old R under a good heavy load. However the thresher owner stopped that one, said after he got couple more years fixing on old thresher he'd go for it. I spoke with him just recently, tells me he had the 70 on thresher last year and he is just finishing a Super WD9 he'll use this fall. He tells me his next project already on the go a Massey Harris GP on rubber, this one again they used new on farm.

Bob: I sure do understand, I had one Deere in my fleet. It didn't put out the horses the 1066 did but it's horses were more efficient. I sure like that power shift on shuttle work as well. Like you I like to hear all good working tracrors under load. They all have their own unique sound. I have never been around old Massey Harris a lot. This area where I live is loaded with them. The older local guys tell me they had just a great dealer here throughout the 40s and early 50s, and it shows. To the west of us here there must also have been a good Oliver dealer. From what I'm hearing Cockshutt was king from Owen Sound through to Lake Huron. Looks like IH and Deere had that large Erie Shore from Windsor to Niagara. That is just a newcommers impression touring the shows. May be I will get my knuckles wraped.
