I have use of my uncle's 140, and I am trying to determine the year. The transmission case has the number 351687 R8 and the engine number is 367825 R2. Does anyone know what year this is? The serial number list does not give any of these for any of the 140 years. I am going to use it to run a 5 foot King Cutter rotary mower. Any help is grestly appreciated.

The numbers you are quoting are casting or part numbers, not serial numbers. There are dates on the castings that take the form 5-15-P (example) The P indicates the year according to IH codes. Sometimes the two digit year number was used. There should be a nameplate with the serial number on the clutch housing of your 140 that will allow you to determine the year. You can run a lightweight 5 ft rotary cutter with your 140 in light cutting. Heavy tall grass will be too much for it. You will need an overrunning clutch for the PTO to keep the inertia of the rotary cutter blade from pushing your tractor. The inertia will push the tractor though the PTO gears which are connected directly to the transmission drive shaft and thus the wheels.

Thanks for the info. I have 17 acres that have been bush-hogged to remove the heavy stuff. I am going to use the 140 to keep the grass mowed down, so will not be doing any heavy cutting. I appreciate the overrunning clutch information. That will be a big help, and probably keep me from damaging my uncle's tranny.

The overrunning clutch is to keep from damaging the front of the tractor or yourself or your fences. Years ago, a neighbor was using a bushhog on a small tractor without the overrunning clutch. My dad had to pull him out of his pond because the inertia of the blade pushed him right in. He could not stop.

Man at tractor supply said not getting pushed is the biggest reason for the clutch, but it also helps the brakes last longer and reduces strain on the transmission. Believe me, I can use all of the help I can get.
