I have a lot of play in my "H" steering wheel. I took off the top plate where worm gear shaft and big steering gear meet. The play appears to be between these two gears , worn with age I guess. I this common? how much problem is it to replace these two gears????? any input appreciated.

This is a normal problem with these old Farmalls, and not too hard to replace. Replace the bushing too, a lot of wear happens there too. Unlike the old Massey Harris' and Cockshutts, you can't adjust the steering wear on Farmalls.
