I just started my 52 "H" for the first time after installing all new wiring harness and amp gauge. I checked, double checked, and triple checked every connection with the diagram, and everything works great, except that when I throttle up, the amp gauge shows discharge instead of charge, and when turning on the lights, the amp gauge shows charge. If I reverse the wires on the amp gauge, will it show opposite of what I have?

Go ahead and reverse the wires on the amp gauge. Should cure the reverse readings you have now. Disconnect the battery first so something doesn't short out when removing the wires.

Thanks, I'll try that. Aside from that, could there be a short somewhere? My gut feeling is no because of the way its acting.

Paul - I agree with Farmer Bob - it's simply a polarity mismatch between the ammeter and the system ground. Just swap the wires at the ammeter again and you'll be good.

You can verify generator/ammeter operation by taking a voltmeter reading across the battery terminals with the engine running at governed RPM. An indication of 6.5 volts or more means the battery is being charged.

I'll third that. You have your wires reversed. There should not be any problems after you reverse the wires on your guage.
