Is this as simple as changing the alt, distributor, starter to 12 volt?

Probably need to change the lights over also.

Thanks
Mike

I always tell my customers that when doing a 12 volt conversion that the starter should be changed to 12 volt also as it reduces the rpm of the starter to the original speed and adds years to the life of your drive and ring gear.

Just some advice, Tim K.

Mike: Mush more simple than that. You go from Pos to Neg ground. Mount your alternator, I like to use a double pulley from the last V8 Olds or Buick, allows you to place alternator back farther, thus lower, and use the outer pulley. I always change coil from 6 to 12 volt, saves fooling with those resistors. Starter and distributor need not be touched. I use the two wire system and the extra wire in your harness can be used for an excite wire. I put a starter type push button on dash for exciting alternator. With the push button this avoids the risk of it being left on and thus running battery down when tractor is not in use. Only other item is your lights. Any questions on details just ask.

There are some of us that would ask "Why do you want to convert from 6V to 12V? As Hugh MacKay usually points out, if you have good, heavy battery cables it should start. I followed his advice and am now a firm believer of replacing the battery cables periodically and leaving it at 6V. My '50 C spins over like a top now.

If you go to the left of this screen and under "Research & Info" and go to Articles. Under Maintence and Mechanical Information there is a paper titled "Converting from 6 Volt to 12 Volt". This is a very good place to start.

Randy: You know something, very few people actually listen. You are absolutely 100% correct. The 6 volt system is all you ever need for a 4 cylinder gas Farmall. I have started them when it was so cold you couldn't use them anyhow.

My 6 volt alternator on Super A is absolutely the best working one I have. With that one all I did was change from pos to neg ground, add the alternator and the excite switch. Now heading into it's 11th year it has been absolutely trouble free, even the same 6 volt battery is in the tractor. It started this past winter several times at 0 degrees or lower, and started very quickly I might add.

I haven't have a change of heart Randy, just got tired of telling people what to do. I try now to curb myself into just telling people how to do it. You were one of the few people who actually listened. For every Randy there has been a hundred where it went in one ear and out the other. I trust your system is working well. Good to see you are keeping an eye on me. Make note on the above, I said TRY.

We had trouble for years getting our C to start. After learning about the differences in the battery cables, I replaced the old. However, it still wouldn't roll over good so I just stopped and thought about it some, then moved the ground cable from the pedestal box to the hydraulic unit and then it spun over like I had a 12 volt battery in it.

Don: That is precicely what I do always run the ground strap to a casting. That old sheet metal just isn't good enough ground.

I also go for soldered on ends on my cables and 1 gauge wire. When cables start looking a bit on crappy side after 10 years or so I turf them. Many many good batteries have been wasted because of poor cables.

I had lot of starter troubles with a 6.2 Chevy diesel. I went through one a year when truck was new. I moved the batteries side by side and wired it up with 1 gauge same type system as used on highway tractors. The last starter went 6-7 years. Poor power supply very hard on starters. On a 100 hp John Deere, around Christmas was a bit sluggish starting, 12 year old machine, batteries 6 years old. I replaced all cables with heavier than original. Got two more years from batteries, and that machine was being started every day in sub 0 weather with out block heater.
