Townsend: You mention dial, the only dial I can think of is light switch, it shouldn't be needed for starting. Turn it counter clockwise as far as it goes. Is your starter turning engine over? Starter is pull rod on right. Your ignition switch is in center just above fuse for lights. Sounds as though yours has been changed from push-pull button to a toggle switch.

Is your tractor still 6 volt generator system? If so your battery should be hooked up pos ground.

I had a mechanic tell me the dial when turned half way is ignition and all the way up is lights...it is 6 volt and positive ground....the swith is like an off on switch....i dont know how else to describe it....flip it on flip it off..so this is what ur telling me....turn the dial all the way clockwise....flip switch on....push choke(ring on left) in....and pull the starter(on the right)..that should turn it over????

Townsend: Light switch off is counter clockwise. You never did confirm exact age of this tractor, so from here on I assume Super A. Starter is on right and you pull to activate. Ignition switch is in center, original was pull out for on push in for off. Choke is on left and you pull to activate.

Also you never did say whether mag or distributor. You have never told us whether tractor turns over when starter is activated. You have never indicated whether you cleaned screen and carb and added fresh gas. You are a rather hard fellow to help, we are not magic men.

Townsend: I am assuming with new battery it is turning over well on starter. I would say first off a few question are in order if we are to help. Is the tractor mag or distributor ignition?

On gas you should drain all and start with fresh, but first a cleaning will be in order. Stale gas tends to turn kind of like shelac or varnish in carb so it should be taken off and cleaned well and possibly a new kit added. Under the fuel tank should be a sedment bowl. If you remove that bowl there is a gasget and above that a screen. I have seen the screens seal off with shelac just sitting over winter. I would install a new gasget and screen regardless.

On age of tractor, you turn to left of screen and under Research & Info click on serial numbers, from there click on Farmall, the various models will come up, click on whatever you wish to check. Farmall A were built from 1939 to 1947 and Super A from 1947 to 1954. If you serial number is over 250001 tractor is definately a Super A

You come back with type of ignition and someone will be on deck to help with that. One other item, old Farmalls that have been sitting for sometime, the very best way to start is by towing. If you do that keep it under 10 mph and use high gear. I have seen guys tinker all day wth these trying to get them going. Tow them 25' and they fire right up. I remember a neighbor had a fleet of old Farmalls he only used for haying, then back in shed until next season. In spring he didn't even try the starter, just tow started them all, let them run for an hour or so to get batteries charged and engine limbered up, and he was away for season.

If it has hydraulics it is a Super "A" & has to be a '47 or later. Did you drain ALL gasoline from tank & carb & fill with NEW gasoline?
The points will need cleaning. If it has a magneto the point gap is .013". Not sure about distributor point gap. It might help to remove the plugs and squirt some oil into the cylinders to help the compression.
I'm sure there will be more suggestions from others on this board. Good luck
