W4 or I4?

I recently purchased what I thought was a W4, but when I got it home and took a closer look I noted that the original paint under its red second coat was yellow. This makes me wonder if it is really an industrial model. The serial number plate is missing, so I don't have that to go by. How can I learn more about what this tractor is?

In our part of the world, some W4's & W6's were used by the county & state government for various purposes. As far as I know, they were all painted yellow. Could your's have been a government tractor? Is it that "industrial" yellow, or is it a "post-war" tractor that had red paint that faded to a yellow-orange color? If its a '45 or '46, I'd guess that you are seeing the original paint that faded. (There should be a thread or two in the archives about "orange" or "yellow" tractors.) I'd like to find one that had enough of that old "odd-colored" paint on it to match. I'd think it would be nice to have one with that odd colored paint on it. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

You could be right about it being a "government" tractor. The state highway department may have used it for mowing. The drawbar has been heavily reinforced, so it must have been used for pulling something heavy.

An I-4 will have a leaf spring on the front axle, and also will have a foot throttle as well as the hand throttle, the original hitch would have been a pintle type. there are other differances, but some of these are not visible from the outside of the tractor.

If it has International on the grill badge and a foot accellerator it is a I-4. If it says McCormick or McCormick Deering on the grill badge and no foot accellerator it is a W-4. The I-4 might or might not have a pental hitch and wheels and front axle might or might not be different. Also, the gear ratios are different and a few other little things. The hood decals should say International for I-4 and McCormick or McCormick Deering for W-4 but decals can be changed when painted so I wouldn't rely on that.
