What is the oil pressure for a Super A? My gauge has lost all its lettering and I can't tell what it is. I seem to have a leak at the oil pan rim. If I replace the oil pan gasket will my pressure increase? When changing my oil I stuck my finger in the drain hole and to my surprise there was a metal plate, loosely over the hole area. What the heck is this and is it normal? Would this also account for engine power loss when under load?

The oil pan leak will not increase the oil pressure that thing you touch in the drain hole is the float on the oil pump. Most likly you got same problem I had wiyh my B the oil pump has pewter base and over time it will warp and then the gasket will not seal and the oil leaks out the base of the pump and you loose pressure so if the pan gasket leaks take it off and check the punpm then.

When the oil is cold you should have at least 1/2 to 2/3 deflection of the needle. When it warms up and is idling it will be lower. When my C (same engine) is warmed up and idling it goes to just a little less than half way which on my guage is about 25-30 lbs. I have about 70 lbs with cold oil pressure at max rpms. Replacing the oil pan gasket will have absolutely no effect on the oil pressure. As far as the metal plate that is most likely the plate on the bottom side of the oil pickup assembly for the oil pump. It floats in your oil so that the pump is not sucking the gunk off the bottom of the oil pan. This allows for fluctuations in the oil level due to oil draining back from the top of the motor, side hill operation, and for those that do not always check the oil level and the possibility of lower than recommended oil level. Not much to removing the oil pan and replacing the gasket. Good opportunity to clean all of the dirt and metal files from the bottom of the pan. The gasket is readily available from you local Case/IH dealer for just a couple of dollars.
