Guys I have a 3 bottom IH rope trip plow, that I don't have the foggest what model, but the rope trip is giving me fits. Had it all apart and cleand and greased up but it still will not drop all the way down and catch, just slides the wheel for a ways and then it may go on around and catch or go past and raise and catch out of the ground.
Any suggestions or help will be gratefull.
Bob- Wyo.

Bob: When you had that hub apart cleaning it, did you notice any parts worn. It's been 40 years since I've had anything to do with one of these, but I do remember replacing some worn parts for just the problem you describe.

The other item you need is better traction on your land wheel. Is it on steel or rubber? If steel are all the corks on there? A few of those missing will allow wheel to slide. If on rubber does it still have a traction type tire with a tread similar to tractor? Remember that tread must also be oposite to tractor to be effective. If your tire has been replaced by an automotive type tire you probably need a tire chain on it. I am thinking your problem could be 2 fold; worn parts plus the wheel slide is causing the hub to stop it's function midstream so to speak. I think you will find that hub is designed for continuous steady rotation once it begins it's function. I would first correct the land wheel traction, and see what happens. I think it's one of those situations where you cant live with two wrongs, you may get away with one.

I have a two bottom little genius, which is possibly what you have, but a 3 bottom type. First time I used mine I pulled the rope and held it too long, it lowered and came right back up. I have also seen some that needed the point of the share (heated and shaped on an anvil))tipped down a little, skip right out of the ground or scoot along the ground and not go in, if the ground was hard. One thing for sure, DON'T wrap the rope around your hand. If the plow uncouples, you will get yanked out of the seat.Don't tie it onto any part of the tractor either, and for Gods sake, DON'T tie a knot in the end and sit on it. that knot might rake you someplace you would rather not get raked if you know what I mean. I picked up a lot of rope trip plow tips at a show and plow demonstration at Tipton Indiana a couple years ago, a lot of old timers were there to watch and help some of us "youngsters" along. One guy helped me with the centerline and draft of the hitch. I had it hooked in the center hole on the drawbar, but he told me to move it over two holes. rear bottom got a full cut then. My ol 10-20 had a small pulley hooked on the left fender. I wondered what it was for, until I hooked up the plow. the pulley is just forward of the seat and it makes it pretty easy to trip the plow. If you do something like that though , make sure the knot is taken out of the rope so it will pass through ok if it unhitches. if you think there may be parts missing on yours, I could send you pics of my plow, I just cleaned it up and painted it last week.
