howdee all. i've been having a problem keeping the pilot bearing in the clutch on this 404. i have replaced it 3 times in the last 2 years. needless to say, rather a great pain in the neck. any ideas as to what the problen could be? the shaft on the pilot end seems to be fine. anyone have this kind of problem with this kind of tractor?

I have had the same problem on my IH404, even took the shaft out and had a machinist cut off the ends, weld a new piece of steel in between to get it to run true. he even made a new brass pilot bushing for it. It also wore out, but I think thatbrass was the wrong choice. At any rate I am looking at having to split the tractor again to try anew. It can be ran like that, but it sets up a great vibratiion when the clutch isa pushed in above idle and it keeps the tranny turning, making it hard to shift gears.

Had the same problem with SC, but the pilot bearing was only a bronze bushing. It would fail about every 2 years. This tractor had a loader with hydraulic pump on PTO shaft and no live PTO so there was a lot of clutch action.
Interesting thing though is the pilot bearing only turns when the clutch is depressed.
In your case is the clutch depressed for long periods of time at high engine RPMs ?

HOWDEE JB. NO THE CLUTCH ISNT DEPRESSED FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME. AND I SHOULD RE-STATE THAT THE BEARING IS IN FACT A BUSHING. RIGHT FROM CASE INTERNATIONAL. PERHAPS A STAINLESS BUSHING WOULD DO THE TRICK. OR WEAR OUT THE SHAFT. ANY WAY, SOMETHING ISNT QUITE RIGHT. THANKS FOR THE HELP FELLAS.
