I know that some purists will not be pleased with what I am proposing but its better off to see if used then sitting in the shed. The neighboring farm just went under and I saw the opportunity to grab a very well maintained Farmall 560 with a wide front. Previously we had nothing on the farm under 140hp that was in regular use. I felt slightly guilty running a 6ft brush hog behind a 140 horse with front wheel assist. I think this is a good fit for mowing field lines, doing some cultivating and doing some light loader work around the farms. The problem is that it must be useable to my elderly father. Many moon ago we owned a 656, beutiful tractor, I cried the day we sold it. I have read about people throwing the shift linkage from the '56 line into the '06 models. Can this also be done to the '60 models? Furthermore can the TA be relocated ('06/'56 style) onto the side of the hood? If I can move the TA, then I could make it a side mount tractor with steps (basicly a 706 with 560 style). This would make it much easier to get on and off with 3pt attachments on it.

Sorry for the long post. Thanks in advance.

The previous owner of my 560 did some extensive work and made my 560 a front mount tractor. With 3 steps to mount, it is a very accesible tractor. But even with all the work that was done, I still need to remember to pull the TA back before I dismount. If you are handy and like projects, it can be done. However, a 560 is still not a 656. While I am really fond of 560's, and mine is much improved, I would never have the time or patience to do what this fellow did. If I knew how to post pics....(or had made it a point to learn...ha,ha)I'd give you an idea of where you could go with it if you wanted.

I would be very interested in seeing how this was done. Perhaps I could move it over to the right side of the tractor and then I could avoid the TA completely. Please send me pics of your tractor if you get a chance.

When people talk about puting 56 series shifters on 06 series, they're talking about puting 826, 756, 856, 1256, and 1456 shifters onto 706, 806, and 1206. Those have the 4 speed with high and low range. 560 has a plain old 5 speed, so no, the linkage swap wouldn't work for you. As for the TA linkage, it needs to be in perfect ajustment at all times, so I would worry that modification would throw off the ajustment and travel of the linkage. I like the idea of trading it. If it is in real good shape, you could get a good deal on a trade on somthing in the 544, 656, 666, 686 family. The 656 series tractors were a vast improvment over the the 60 series in terms of comfort.

No, major changes in tractors, not remotely possible to modify, get a 544/656/666.

I agonized over that one most of the years I owned my 560 especially after I bought a 656. My main reason for wanting to do it was different from yours. I wanted to move operator platform ahead the length of batteries so mounted implements could be raised higher without hitting seat. You know what, I agonized until I bought 1066 then 560 became my silo blower tractor, and was awfully nice to be able to reach PTO lever and throttle from the ground and behind the tractor. You'll just have to buy a 656 to go with it.

If you want to do a bunch of cutting and welding, anything is possible. The 560 was the end of the M-400-450-560 line and its power train has very little in common with the 706.

Could you justify a tractor for dad? A 756 with a ROPS cab, perhaps?

The TA would be the easier of the two, since the shift on the 560 mounts into the top of the transmission.
