I have gone thru 3 different cam gears. The first one came loose and ate itself up, the second came loose and broke the keyway in the cam. The last one broke away from the hub and ate into the front casting. Anybodyhave a clue what is causing this?

Assuming you've been installing the cam gears properly, breakage like you describe is probably the result of the hydraulic system relief pressure being set too high. The relief valve that should limit system pressure to 1,200 psi. Higher pressures put excessive strain on the pump and it's drive. And since the pump driven by the cam gear, high pressure can cause the cam gear to work loose or it's hub to break - especially if you use the hydraulics a lot. (Been there done that….)

Assuming you are putting in a new cam & gear, replacement cam from CNH is left hand thread, new design gear has a solid web, old had right hand threads and hub has 3 holes. I have not seen the newer design fail, check the other post also about the relief valve, IH called it a regulator safety and flow control valve. If its not functioning correct it will always load the engine.

RPM - You are right about the new CIH strengthened (solid web) cam gear. However it's the camshaft, not the cam gear that determines whether the cam gear nut is right- or left-hand threaded. The cam threads on my '53 Super M is left-handed. But a friend of mine has as pair of 400's - we discovered one is threaded each way. Go figure…

Not sure one thread direction is better than the other - have seen both kinds work loose. Went so far as to tack weld the keeper to the nut on the last 400 we had to fix.

The last 450 had the cam lht, gears were intro in SM, I worked at a IH dealer from 1960 in parts & service. This is where the replacement parts came from, subbed from 48196D-- cam to 48196DBX with a left hand nut 368598R1. Our shop foreman was always very critical of the press fit even on new parts. In fact I still work a CNH dealer, been at this for 43 years.
