I was wondering if any of you guys could help me out on this problem I have.. I have just gotten an M around the years of 1950-54 and it has been sitting for about 3 to 4 years. The engine is not stuck and there are no problems that I have found so far other than the battery is dead on it. I put the battery on the charger today to let it charge and I thought I would try to crank it tommorow. I have a new battery if it doesn't hold a charge.I was just wondering if any of you guys had a suggestion to help crank it.. I put some fresh gasoline in it a checked all the other fluids. We tried pulling it off today but I was told if the battery is completely dead that it will not crank that way either. Any opinions would be appreciated.

Big Red, To save some grief later, go ahead and pull the plug out of the bottom of the carb and let some fresh gas run through it . Also take off the bottom of the air cleaner and clean the bowl out and run a rag down thru the air intake pipe and you'll be amazed what you will find. Also once the battery is deemed ok take the dist. cap off and open the points up and clean them cause you know they will be corroded. And finally I would pull start it the first time to have some mercy on the starter that has been in hibernation for 4 years.. Farmalls Forever, Tim K.

I believe that I would change the engine oil before attempting to start it. I might even be tempted to pull the pan to check the oil pump pickup just to make sure it's clean. At that time, I would scrape all the gunk out of the pan. JB has a good idea about putting some oil in the cylinders and turning it over by hand. I would go a little farther and have you crank the engine without the ignition on and get some oil pressure before trying to start it. Good luck and HTH. Larry

Before starting, remove all the spark plugs and squirt some crankcase oil in every cylinder.
If you have an engine crank, crank the engine over with the spark plugs removed and be sensitive to any binding. If it binds then possible valve stuck shut. Next if you have a compression guage quickly check each cylinder. If there is compression then there are no valves stuck open. If you don't have a compression guage but have a friend crank the engine and stick your thumb over each spark plug hole one at a time checking for air pressure.

If there are any stuck valves they will have to be corrected before attempting to start with starter.

Good Luck
JB

Good advice, just make sure not to get your thumb sucked into the cylinder. It's not common, but can happen. Good luck with your new toy.
