Wanted to say thanks to all that helped me out with my 400 being stuck in gear. Managed to get it free by taking the advice of "Aces" and Hugh MacKay. Mr.MacKay even went trouble of answering my questions via email(some of my emails were lenghty also).

The fix was shortening the link on the TA and using a come-a-long hooked to another tractor to releive the bind on the gears. Even with this, it was not easy to pop the rails back into neutral. After I was able to shift the tractor again, went throught the clutch and TA adjustment (Is it just me, or does anyone else get confused during this adjustment---maybe using both the operators manual and TA maintenance manual is my problem)and the tractor seems to shift fine. Need to get the shifting lever built up and beleive will prevent the same problem from happening again.

Once again----thanks

Scott: I am only too glad we were able to in someway help. I had never run across one as tough as yours to come out of gear. I am still kind of curious on one item, were all three rails engaged. It's been awhile since I had one of these apart and I have been trying to figure if that is possible. I would appreciate knowing this, we have to learn something from this also.

yes, all three rails were engaged--4/5th, 2/3 lined up but forward of neutral, rev/1st forward the other rails. Started on the right most rail looking down from the top rear of the tractor (rev/1st). Got that one to move slightly--now all three rails lined up but still forward from neutral. Next, shortened the TA link and pulled the TA-blocked the clutch--nothing will move. Hooked up the come-a-long and racheted down, as you stated I tried several positions until I found one where I could get a rail to move. Outer rails would not move-used alot of pull and was able to get the middle rail to "pop" into neutral, after that the next one(4/5th)was relativly easy but still a little tough. Last rail I moved (rev--1st), was easy.

Scott: Great to hear it was a sucess. Next question do you have any noise tou didn't have before? I had never heard of all three rail having engaged gears. It was my suspicion after I learned how muc trouble you were having.

You shouldn't feel too badly, I was doing some equipment operation at a modern farm just last year. The newest tractor on farm would if place in park on certain grade, not come out when starting to operate again. One of the other tracrors on farm would have to hook a chain on, to take presure off thus allowing operator to get it out of park.
