This Sunday after church me and a friend plan on seperating and tearing down the engine on his model A. We are both mechanic but know nothing about these beasts is there any pointers or thing to be carefull about that we need to know, so we dont cause anymore damage. (when purchased we where told the engine was lock up) I dont think we are going to test it but if it would be benifitial to have # 1 at TDC before we pull the mag we can try. The axle housing is also leaking at the end but i dont think we are going to mess with him this week
Thanks still green with these

I guess I would have to ask the stupid question of why are you tearing the motor down if you are not sure if it is stuck or not. If the motor is stuck then you are not going to be able to get #1 on TDC until after you free it up. As others have said these tractors are simple to work on. My brother and I split my C, put in a front transmission seal, and had it back together in less than two hours.

If both of you are mechanics then your project should be a breeze. Very simple engines and fun to work on.

Before you break your "A" in half take off your Hood, Grill, Raditor, Valve Cover, Head, and Pan first.

There is a good chance that you will not need to separate the tractor.

I would suggest that you NOT remove your Dist/Mag. This will keep your timing in sink.

You can usually do everything except pulling the crank or replacing the clutch without separating the tractor.

I sure wouldn't put it back together without replacing the front crank seal. You will need some help with this but lets cover that in another post.

GOOD LUCK

Use care, go slow, and enjoy. Put support under the drawbar before splitting, they are known to get back heavy. Pull the starter to make sure it is not locked as that may be the problem.

Try to find a I.T manual they give pretty good information on these little monsters. Once you get into it you will be amazed how simple they are. Have fun!
