I found a nice MD for sale, but it loses its power, and I think it needs a fuel pump rebuild. Does anyone know approximately it would cost to have the pump rebuilt, and who and where rebuilds them?

I had trouble with my MDs governor wanting to let the motor rev up and down without moving the throttle. I was advised to check and change the oil in the pump which I did. The oil in the pump was more like diesel fuel than oil and hadn't been changed in apparently a long time. Several changes later it has significantly improved performance. If you change filters: at least on my machine (if memory serves)the forward filter gravity bleeds but the aft filter must be on the return and I have to crank the motor to get it to bleed. Good luck.

It can cost up to $1500 to have the injection pump rebuilt. Could be less depending on what is the problem. Are you sure there is not a more minor problem, such as a leak letting air get in, or dirty fuel filters. Does it have a pressure gage on the injector pump? If not, put one on and see if you are getting pressure in the run range.

It has a gauge, but I'm not sure what its supposed to read as normal. Its starts on gas fine, switches over fine, and idles fine and runs well at half throttle with no load. It doesnt reach full throttle as it should and loses guts under load. I thought maybe a little more info may narrow things. I have a great affection for those old MD's, and have always wanted to own one, but not so much so as to buy something that would bankrupt me, meaning having to put more into it than it would ever be worth.

Your description sounds like the fuel filters need changing. The gage on my MD is an IH gage and it does not indicate pressure, it just has a red portion on the gage and then a white run range where the pressure is supposed to be during operation. I can't find any pressure info in my manuals, except that the injection nozzles open at 700 psi. I don't know if that is the pressure the gage on the pump reads or not. After a little more thought, could be a problem with the governor, which is internal to the injection pump. There is a separate service manual for the injection pump, which would have all the technical information.

Thanks for the input. My gut feeling is that it isnt a major problem. I wondered about the governor also. I guess its a process of elimination, like everything else. I recon that if I decide to part with the $2 grand for the tractor, I'll get the chance to find out. Hopefully, armed with some decent info, I can get the seller to walk me though some of this elimination without investing first. I figure that if I have to spend $500. or $600. to get to the root of the issue, I'm ahead of the game since the rest of the tractor is in great shape, except one rear rim and tires.
