Somebody lied to me

I picked up an IHC number 86 plow at an auction a few months ago. I just got the 37 F-12 running. The reprint I have from the owners manual says "Less that five minutes is required to attach the plow to the tractor".

So I ask my blushing bride of 32 years to come help me put the plow on the tractor. She probably should have seen a red flag somewhere, but she went along (probably just for the laughs). It took two of us and a handyman jack, come-a-long and our 6 year old grandson hauling drinking water two hours and it still isn't operational.

Who writes these manuals anyway?

Just blowin off a little steam.

Dan

Dan: An interesting side note to someone lying to you on this matter. In our local newspaper this morning, under news with a different slant, they state that lying has reached epidimic proportions across North America. I was kind of hoping they had gone into enough detail so as to tell us whether this phenomina was started by Politicians or Salesmen.

My philosophy was handed down to me from my father. He believed that "THE WORLD IS NEITHER ROUND NOR FLAT BUT CROOKED". If you think about that statement and apply it now, how far off was he.

In my original post I was just making light of the fact that someone wrote in a manual somewhere that it takes less than five minutes to attach the No. 86 two-way quick-attachable plow to the tractor. It may not have even been in a manual, but in CH Wendell's book.

Please don't get me started on politicians, especially the lying bast**** here in Oregon. Every politician lies to get into office and it works so well for them that it just escalates from there.

I thought it was just me. I am glad to hear that someone else has had the first time enjoyment of those tractor mounted plows. I am kinda new to this Farmall thing and I got a set of 2-14's for my C. Took me two hours as well. And the others are right, I swore so much I was embarressed fro myself. Thought I found a gold mine when I found them and it turned out to be fools gold. I am now looking at a three point conversion for my tractor. Having said that You can have my C after you pry my cold dead corpse off it!

The 3 pt system is nice, but let us not forget IH's Fast Hitch. I can back into different implements and get moving much quicker than a three pt implement. The lower two linkages are always easy, but sometimes you have to fight with the top link/implement to get everything just right. Hiniker snow plows still use a very similar version of the two pt fast hitch to hook up there plows, you just drive right up to them.

When I was a kid dad had a farmall C which we used to do most of the cultivating and all of the hay mowing. rear mounted mower. Some days I woul cultivate for a while in the morning, change to the mower and mow hay, then change back to the cultivator and do more cultivating later in the day. Got real good at switching from one to the other. got it down to less than half hour each way.

Dad has told me the same thing about switching implements on the old A. I asked him once why Granddad didn't buy a 2N/8N instead of the A. The Ford wouldn've been a lot cheaper. Dad said that he and all of his brothers always wished that Granddad would've got the Ford, as they spent at least have of their time switching implements. Seems Granddad had worked as a mechanic at the local Ford dealership, and though he didn't work there anymore, at least was on good terms with them and got put on the list to get the next Ford. But, they sold it to somebody else when it arrived. He went directly to the Farmall dealer and bought the A.

Dan: I kind of have to agree with the others, those old mounted implements before the days of 3 point or fast hitch were pretty much a half day job. You also received a certain degree of training for the clergy in the process. At least you tended to learn the words, just not phrased right.

Don't you think Harry Ferguson wants to be canonised as a saint for standardising mounted equipment by the invention of the 3 point linkage? 70 or so years have passed since the system was first invented and there has been nothing found to beat it yet.

Roy: Your right on, I always say Harry won the hitch war before IH sold their first fast hitch. I will say this much though, I still prefer the single point fast hitch used on the offset Farmalls over 3 point on a small tractor. I never liked the larger 2 point fast hitches. most of the big tractors of today are a cross between the 2 anyway. I refer to the telescoping lower links giving much the same advantage fast hitch offered.

I'm not familiar with the particular plow, but I'm amazed the manual said it only takes 5 minutes to attach on of those old mounted plows. Years ago, we had a 3 disk mounted plow for the MD. You started putting it on first thing in the morning and you were usually ready to plow after lunch. It also required jacks, pry bars, wrenches and whatever else.

I got to where I could do it alone in about 30 minutes on an H (same plow); it wasn't bad with 2 people. Hardest part was lining up the v-shaped pull thing with the drawbar that was mounted to the sides of the torque tube. I was always glad to take that thing off. Hard to steer with the rear plow wheel attached to the front tractor wheel. Couldn't turn to the right very well either.

Those manuals are usually written by Jeff Foxworthy-You might be a redneck if...."you think you can believe everything that is written".....LOL
It's sort of a universal truth. Remember Christmas Eve when "Santa" is trying to assemble the toys? I can't remember all the times the directions were wrong or things did not fit like they were suppossed to.
At least you had a waterboy keeping you supplied with cooling refreshments and a wife that did not sit on the sidelines laughing at your constantly failing attempts..

We had SC, with mower, cultivators, and plow. Quite often would mow in the morning, then cultivate in the early afternoon, rake and bale in the late afternoon. Could change mower and rear cultivator in 10 minutes, left side mount cultivators attached unless they were not going to be used again for a few days. If I remember correctly the plow was the hardest to attach. Each implement had its own special place in the shed a stand had been made of 2x4s so the implement would be at the correct height and angle. You just backed straight into it, use the long crank wrench to tighten the bolts and connect the lift pionts and drive away.
The first to be replaced by a 3pt hitch was the plow as we had a JD 420U with 3pt hitch.
Long long time ago. JB
